$66,000 – Seabrook, TX:

“1984 Lotus X100 one of a kind prototype. Fully restored, with 1,250 indicated miles. Probably the only Lotus prototype existing outside the Lotus factory; and most certainly the only one that’s street legal (Texas title and registration).

This is the last road car project designed under company founder, Colin Chapman. When he died in 1982, the project stalled as Lotus found itself in financial trouble. David Wickens, of British Car Auctions, ended up taking a controlling interest in the company, and the project was started up again under the code name, X100. After redesigning the car to be a convertible, the go ahead was given in 1984 to make a single prototype.

Lotus followed their successful Lotus design formula: start with a steel backbone chassis, drop in a donor power plant (tweaked of course), add one fiberglass body, and all the while, keep the weight to a minimum (it’s under 2000 lbs). Follow it up with extensive track testing and suspension development at the factory, and there’s no question it is worthy of the Lotus badge. Having owned an example of just about every Lotus model over the years, it (not surprisingly) drives and handles most like the Elan – the car it was intended to replace. Unlike the Elan however, fuel injection means it starts when expected and no fiddling with carburetors

The X100 was built as a complete production-ready car from fully developed molds, with functional lights, wipers, brakes, suspension, etc.. It even has a jack and owner’s manual. For the power plant, Lotus sourced a Toyota 4AGE drive train, as used in the 1984 Corolla GT, with a Toyota 5 speed manual transmission.

This car is prominently featured in the book, A Life in Car Design, by its Chief Designer, Oliver Winterbottom (2 full chapters with numerous photos and drawings).

Everything works and the car is in show-ready condition. Minor blemishes include a small scratch inside the driver’s door jam, small tears and stains on the convertible top, and a small stain on the carpet in the driver’s footwell. The tires have less than 50 miles, but should be replaced due to age. As can be seen in the pictures, the car is right hand drive, and has a tiny back seat. See below for technical specifications.

Sale includes spare parts and extensive documentation including restoration log book and photos, original sales brochure, photos of the car at the Lotus factory as well as at Toyota factory in Japan, import paperwork, etc. Sold as-is by an individual, not a dealer. Payment accepted: cash or cashier’s check (no PayPal).

Vehicle is available for immediate pickup, or just drive it home! I can assist with shipping arrangements.
